Israeli replacement for M16
The new TAVOR rifle. Optics from the factory, cannot be taken off. When the weapon is safety is on, the optics automatically shut off. Better accuracy at 300 yards than the M16. I saw this on 'Futureweapons' on the Military Channel last night. Here is a little ditty about it and the link. They are probably NOW in service with Israeli military. Sweet looking weapon.
he development of the new assault rifle, that should eventually replace in service the ageing M16A1, CAR-15 and IMI Galil assault rifles, began in Israel in the 1991. The new rifle was developed by the Israel Military Industries (IMI, now TAAS) company, in close cooperation with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). This new rifle received the name of "Tavor" and the designation of TAR-21 (Tavor Assault Rifle, for 21st century). The new rifle first appeared on public in the 1998, and it had been tested by the IDF during 1999-2002. At the moment of writing (spring of 2003) there were no large purchases of the Tavor by the IDF, because of low funding, but late in the 2002 India signed an US $20M contract with IMI for undisclosed number of TAR-21 assault rifles and Galatz sniper rifles. http://www.israeli-weapons.com/weapo...vor/Tavor.html |
Re: Israeli replacement for M16
just like the galil these will not be selected. the economies of scale where the M16 are concerned make it a good buy for the money. the galil was too expensive.
they had FN FALs for a while too. I got an Izzy peep sight on one cobbled together from parts. |
Re: Israeli replacement for M16
Looks like a serious piece of hardware.
Why would IDF care about price? The U.S. will be footing the bill! |

I've always preferred the Russian approach of simpler: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AK-101 (it comes in carbines, too) I also really don't like mags in back. |
Re: Israeli replacement for M16
It looks like an M-16 with a bullpup stock... they just added one more mechanism to go wrong.

Re: Israeli replacement for M16
Sure looks interesting. Might have a place in some kind of strategy. Time (and war) will tell.

Re: Israeli replacement for M16
Designed SPECIFICALLY for CQB. As that's where MOST of IDF's work occurs.
Watch 'Futureweapons' some time and catch it. The TAVOR is a sharp weapon. You get a better butt weld, due to all the weight is NOW in the butt. So it locks up tight and doesn't move around. The short barreled version that the Spec Op guy fired was dead balls accurate. He was hitting steel human shaped targets at 300 yards, within the first few minutes of shooting it. As far as a weapon goes, it appears to be a replacement for the IDF's M16. |
Re: Israeli replacement for M16
Nothing like having your face situated over the chamber. No Thanks. My face may only be 12" or so away from the chamber on a "real" rifle, but I like a little room between me and a 40,000- 50,000 psi pressure spike.
Just my .02. |
Re: Israeli replacement for M16
Another feminine POS. Give me something thats made of wood, steel and spits out projectiles that come from a case at least 50mm long and I'll buy.

Plus you got to figure that the development company is passing out a lot of bribes in the Knesset so they got to make em back somehow! |

Looked slick to me. If I could buy one for the price of an AR15, I would stand in line to do so_grin_ |

Re: Israeli replacement for M16
After only a few 'minutes' of practice he was able to hit man sized targets at 300 yards hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha That is how many minutes and dozens of seconds after he would have been missing his head if he was up against my 70+ year old mauser, I wonder?
Have been following a series on a "Contractors" training course that was conducted last week in east Tennesse. A couple dozen trainees in a one week heavy duty training session where they brought their own weapons, so there was a mix of mostly ARs and AK types. Unfortunately for the ARs there was this horrible unforseen impossible thing that happenned, it rained; and they had to work in the mud. There were two KABOOMS, and many many FTF and FTE, mag failures etc etc. Gee, after 40 years you'd think that they would have gotten the bugs out of that design. Must just be bad luck, maybe it is just simply numeric; should never have used 13 dinky springs in the design. I bet if they build them with 12 14 or 15 they would never have these problems! Oh, and those darn lucky AK's~~~~they must all have been blessed by the "mud" god before they left the factory. If you want to take a look, go to THR.com and look in the tactics section for the contractors training course posts |
